JMP has teamed up with major Australian supermarkets to design a sustainable paper bag that can be used across all areas of their grocery business. Traditionally, paper bags were designed for retail use which rarely, if ever, involved carrying products taken out of refrigerators or freezers.
The challenge was designing a kraft paper bag that met the distinct functionality requirements of a grocery shop whilst incorporating sustainable materials and end of use kerbside recyclability.
JMP embarked on a 12 month journey testing various kraft papers across Europe, Asia and North America that would work both instore and through the supermarkets online delivery channels. The net result was securing a unique recycled kraft paper that not only met and exceeded the strength requirements, but is able to handle cold room environments and subsequent condensation from products.
In order to assist our customers achieving their 2025 National Packaging Targets, our supermarket paper bag is constructed from 100% recycled fibre and is 100% recyclable through kerbside recycling bins in every Australian household.
The introduction of these types of supermarket paper bags will also see a reduction in over 700,000,000 heavy weight plastic shopping bags entering our litter and landfill streams every year. This equates to the elimination of over 30,000 tonnes of plastic!
Our supermarket paper bags are made using FSC® recycled paper which certifies that all the fibre used in the paper is 100% recycled and comes from responsible and ethical sources. Be sure to keep an eye out for our bags around Australia, which carry our JMP FSC® license code (FSC-C148661).
It has long been a mission of JMP to ensure we act responsibly and do the right thing by our staff, our customers, their consumers and the environment. To successfully achieve this, we also require our suppliers to uphold the same strict standards.
JMP is committed not only to respecting human rights but also the environment that we live in. We visit and audit our domestic and international suppliers over 4 times a year and require them to hold valid social audit certifications such as SEDEX. JMP is also a SEDEX member as part of the San Miguel Packaging Corporation.
All of our paper suppliers are FSC® certified, as is JMP (FSC-C148661), for the responsible sourcing of paper materials. We are also the only company in Australia able to supply Post-Consumer Waste plastic recycled shopping bags and ecommerce mailers certified by GECA (Australia).
As you can see from the below images, JMP currently works with a variety of suppliers who can offer bags made to either the GOTS, OEKO-TEX or GRS standards. JMP is NOT certified in these three standards but does have access to both converters and material suppliers carrying these certifications, therefore allowing your finished bags to adhere to these certifications.
